“The Simpsons” Arcade Game Perlers

One of my favorite projects for HardcorePerler.com was the “Super Simpsons” from the game “The Simpsons Arcade Game”. I took another look at the sprite sheets I found online, and decided to make a new set to add to the collection.

I love the Walkman. People forget that the Simpsons started in the 80’s

Hang-On, Final Fantasy 2, and Super Mario Maker sprites.

Here’s some of the random sprites I’ve made over the last few months. After my big Space Invaders piece, I took a little bit of a break. I’m about to wrap up the Super Mario Maker project, and am considering moving into Final Fantasy 2 for my next big project.

I’ll be pinning the Super Mario Maker sprites to the wall soon, and will post update pics. =)

This is the second in the series of the single the single bucket challenge. I have a long term goal of creating ten of these over the next few years.  My first piece like this was a simple pattern, and I was thinking the whole time that the houndstooth pattern looked an awful lot like the ships from Space Invaders, and was inspired.

I worked out most of the design from a screenshot found online of the ships in formation, added the Mystery Ship looming large in the background, plotted out the curve of the “Earth” and continents (not to scale). The big challenge here was to use all the colors while creating a design spontaneously.

It took about 25 hours to sort the beads, 30 to lay out the design, and 3 to tape and iron.

space_invaders_perler_bucket (6) Two sheets of Reynolds Parchment paper covered it nicely. Getting read for a long ironing session. It’s stressful as all getout, and I have to switch up arms. Big stack of books on the ready. Yes I have a functional candy machine in my house.space_invaders_perler_bucket (7)I buy these books half off at Goodwill. No I didn’t read the Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh books. =)

New Space Invaders single bucket Perler project.

New big project in the works. Gotta finish this up in the next 3 days. I separated an entire bucket again and the plan is to make one single piece with it. (Like I did with this)

I’ve laid out the Invaders, shields and laser cannon from the 1978 game Space Invaders, and was planning on what I would do to fill things in, and haven’t made a final decision, but I am going to get back to work on it now.

I will post the finished project or some more updates soon.

More Super Mario Maker Amiibo Costume Perlers.

Here’s the latest batch of Super Mario Maker pieces for the big project: Mario from the original Mario Bros, Mega Man, and Maker Mario Amiibo costumes, and a Thwomp. The next set of these will be mostly set pieces and enemies. I’m glad that I found another game with this many sprites that I want to make. The plan is still to get the total count to around 150-200ish so I can cover most of an entire wall in my kids room; my 9 year old son really loves this game. =)

Piston Hurricane from Punch-Out!! arcade Perler

piston_hurricane_perler punch-out_piston_hurricaneI know I’ve said it in previous posts, but I really liked the Punch-Out!! arcade game. There was a coin-op arcade in my home town called “The Gold Mine” that had the first one that I had ever seen, and I was totally impressed that it had multiple screens (one above) with the characters portrait and stats.

Piston Hurricane was the second opponent in the game, and wasn’t that much tougher than Glass Joe was, but if you beat Mr. Dream, you could face a “smarter” version of him with blue instead of red gloves (same for Glass Joe). I had one bead fall over during the ironing process, but I was able to cut it out and repair. The trio of these guys looks super cool, now I just need to find a proper place to display them. =)

Excitebike Perler fridge magnet set.

20150326_181904It’s not often that you see the background objects of videogames featured in art projects. I liked that the game Excitebike included things like cameramen and pit-crews in along the track. I really like the hard green borders they have, too.

I’ve been working on a ton of fridge-magnets for the reddit gift exchange, and for another project to finally sell some of my art for the people who keep on asking. =) I’ll be updating the page soon with a whole series on magnet stuff soon.

Ironing tutorial for Perler Beads Donkey Kong and King Koopa.

Here is part 2 of the Donkey Kong and King Koopa.  You check out the guide to prepare them for ironing with the Masking Tape Method here. Let me know what you think of these videos in the comments. =)

Bowser and Donkey Kong Perler

Bowser and Donkey Kong Perler Bowser and Donkey Kong BeadspriteI really liked the Bowser sprite when I was checking some sprites forum, and right afterwards, I realized that I had yet to make a proper Donkey Kong. I love the iconic +++ of DK’s teeth, and the angry stomping pose. Bowser looks like’s he’s just told a joke, like a “amirte” pun.

I would love to see a proper game that re-introduces Donkey Kong as the villain, or a game where Bowser is the good guy. I’ve made a video with the ironing process of both of these guys that I will release in the next week or so, as well as some other tutorials, including making fridge magnets and keychains.
